Spending Time with Family at the Holidays

Spending time with loved ones during the holidays can be one of the greatest blessings. It can also be a time where we realize how quickly a family member is aging and how they are not able to get around like they once did.  We worry about them being able to care for themselves. Creating a safe environment for them in their home so that they can live comfortably and be cared for there or moving them into a senior community where they can receive the care they need becomes our focus. Here are some things that can help.

Aging in Place
If it is best for your loved one to stay in their home, they may require downsizing in order to make room for a walker or wheelchair or remove any obstacles that could create a challenge for them as they walk through their home. They may also need to clear a guest bedroom to make room for a caretaker.

Moving to a Senior Community
As we age, change becomes more and more difficult and so it is important to create a space in their new home where they feel comfortable and are surrounded by familiar things just in a smaller space. The transition is difficult but once they get settled and realize they have everything they need, they feel a freedom and quickly get involved in their new community.

Whether moving or aging in place, the most important thing you can do to support your loved one is to set goals and guide them through the process with patience. It is important for seniors to maintain their independence and it is very difficult for them to accept help. One way to make them feel in control is to ask questions and not give commands. They want to know you care about them are are willing to let them work through the emotional process of letting go. If you know trouble is bound to erupt when you work with your family member, maybe it is best to get someone on the outside to help. When a professional gets involved, it ensures that family relationships stay strong. To find out more click here.

What are You Thankful for?

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because it is all about family, friends and good food -- NOT stuff!

When asking people what they are thankful for, we heard things like family, friends, health, a beautiful world to live in, food and shelter, a job, and coffee. Not one person said they were thankful for the garage full of stuff they have not seen in years, the keepsakes collecting dust on their shelves, or the clothes in their closet that no longer fit. However, for some reason we hold tightly to these things.

This season, let us focus on all of the blessings in our lives and begin to clear the clutter so that we have room for what is really important to us. Every day we help people make space for what is truly important to them. We would love the privilege of assisting you this holiday season.

Getting Organizing for the Holidays

You are probably wondering why we are talking about the holidays when it still feels like summer. The reason why we are talking about getting organized for the holidays is that I have seen so many clients have great intentions to host a party or family gathering in their home year after year, but it never happens because they did not start planning soon enough.  Believe it or not, now is the time to begin getting ready, especially if getting your home decluttered is part of the plan.
  • Start by going room by room, decluttering and organizing. Concentrate on the rooms that guests will be in first.  Sort things out for keep, donate, and trash. Get the donations and trash out of the space and then organize what you are keeping. If you feel overwhelmed and do not know where to begin, please contact us for support and direction.
  • Make a list of any repairs that need to be done to the home to get it looking its best. If you need recommendations of reputable companies, please contact us at info@psorganizing.com for a recommendation.
  • Start planning the event. Pick a date, make a guest list and plan out the food. The biggest mistake people make is over-complicating this step. Keep things simple so that you can enjoy the event as well.
Maybe in years past you have wanted to have friends and family in your home for the holidays but have just never gotten the house presentable so that you could. We would love the opportunity to help you reach your goals this year. Check out our new client special to receive $100 off your first session.
